Governance101.com is a website that uses ideas described in A Framework for Governance (c) 2017 to explain situations, problems, and solutions that may be encountered and/or explored by governing boards. An effective board fulfills its responsibilities in four areas. It must:
- Be ready as a board to fulfill its role
- Provide a strategic voice for (and to) the organization
- Give operational guidance to the organization
- Deliver accountability for the organization
Every governing board…
- Has a strategic role that can and should be clearly defined, with a balanced triad of responsibility, authority and accountability;
- Has choices in how it approaches the job;
- Can improve its own performance through intentional professional development and steady, consistent application of beliefs, values and attitudes that support effective governance; knowledge of effective governance principles; and skill at performing critical governance tasks.

Models of Governance
Policy Governance
Policy Governance is a strategic governance model that provides a governing board with the ability to govern itself, and the organization, on behalf of its ownership, to assure benefits for designated beneficiaries. It does so with a sound basis of principles to which a board adheres, but within which the board has many choices for flexibility and creativity.

Coherent Governance
Coherent Governance is another strategic governance model that provides a governing board with the ability to govern itself, and the organization, on behalf of its ownership, to assure benefits for designated beneficiaries. It is very closely related to Policy Governance in its application of governance principles, ensuring consistency while allowing flexibility.

Student Outcomes Focused Governance
Student Outcomes Focused Governance is a third strategic governance model employed by the Council on Great City Schools that provides a governing board with the ability to govern itself, and the organization, on behalf of its ownership, to assure benefits for designated beneficiaries. It is very closely related to both Policy Governance and Coherent Governance in its adherence to firm principles while enabling flexibility in execution.
