Board Readiness

Two board readiness components are mindset and approach.

1. Mindset – What beliefs, attitudes, and habits has the board adopted in support of its organizational mission?

2. Approach – How does the board approach its governance job?

Strategic Voice

The components of values and vision help the board find its strategic voice and exercise that voice to guide the district for the long term.

3. Values – What critical values has the board determined to be essential for organizational success?

4. Vision – What results are expected as part of the board’s long-term vision for the organization.

Operational Guidance

Ensuring that the board member role is clear and supported with boardsmanship guidance, the board role is understood with its own governance guidance, and the management role is defined with instruction in the form of management guidance – these are the components of operational guidance.

5. Boardsmanship Guidance – What are the board’s expectations for individual board members as provided in written boardsmanship protocol?

6. Governance Guidance – What expectations has the board written to guide its own process?

7. Management Guidance – What expectations has the board identified for management of the organization?

Accountability

Assuring success is the ultimate purpose of a board, and it has three components: organizational accountability, which is supported by board accountability and individual board member accountability (an individual responsibility supported by the full board).

8. Organizational Accountability – Is the organization making progress in achieving the strategic vision? Is the organization in compliance with board expectations as provided in management guidance?

9. Board Accountability – How well does the board meets its self-imposed obligations as contained in governance procedures?

10. Board Member Accountability – How well does the individual board member comply with expected boardsmanship practices?
