A short but informative YouTube video explaining association governance.
Association and other Membership Boards
Those to whom the board answers
Member-driven organizations are formed by members. They elect members to serve them, and the general membership periodically receives reports from the board, which must answer to the members from whose ranks they come.
Those whose interests are served
Depending on the organization’s purpose and mission, an association may be formed with a desire to serve others, but an association board of directors must as a minimum serve the interests of its members.
Overlapping Roles
Unless the core purpose of the association is service to others, the entity served by the board is identical to the entity to which it must answer. In an association formed from those in service to others, there will likely be a larger conception of customers. Examples include physicians, nurses, educators, etc. But the board has a 1-to-1 match between those to whom it answers (the membership) and the core of those who are served by the organization (the membership).
