What

  • An introduction to A Framework for School Governance, providing a broad overview of a board’s governing responsibilities and how to use the framework to assess a board’s current level of performance, OR
  • An introduction to one of two governance models, Policy Governance or Coherent Governance, outlining a mindset and an approach to governance and what a board can do to assure organizational effectiveness, OR
  • Referral to other consultants for other governance models, such as Student Outcomes Focused Governance, with a similar mindset and approach to governance.

Why

  • The board may be unclear with its understanding of governance responsibilities, or dissatisfied with its current level of performance, and wishes to clarify its role and that of its CEO or improve how it performs its governance role.
  • One member (or more) of a board-management team has heard about Policy Governance or Coherent Governance or Student Outcomes Focused Governance, and wants the team to learn more, or is already familiar with a model but wishes to introduce its concepts and potential benefits to other members of the team.

Who

  • Board members and their CEO, or Board members, the CEO, and the CEO’s top management team

When

  • Usually at a special meeting of the board, such as a professional development or work-study session.
  • Time required for initial introduction can be from 1-3 hours.

Where

  • Wherever the board usually meets for work-study sessions, or at a retreat site.

How

  1. Initial discussion with board’s contact person (this could be the CEO) about issues the board is dealing with, and the board’s awareness and interest in learning more about the model.
  2. Presentation and explanation of the framework or model. (See example presentation)
  3. Discussion of services we can offer to help the board learn more, to develop board policies, to integrate the model into board practice, and stay on track.
  4. Recommended further study and preparation.
